2001 Age-Group Profiles

Bill Schweizer (USA)

Born June 11, 1922. Citizen of the U.S.A. Twelve gold medals in 19 world championships, including ITU Triathlon Worlds in both 1999 and 2000. BS, Mechanical Engineering, University of Iowa. Project manager in IBM's space program, now retired. Resident of upstate New York. Married to Rita, a "great companion, supporter, and teammate, and overall, just a delightful person". Four adult children. Self-described "mediocre" high school football and ice hockey player. Began running at age 40, discovered triathlon in the early 80's . . . and quickly began to redefine the aging process. Has competed in 27 national championships in triathlon and duathlon, winning the division on all but four occasions. At the 1992 ITU Triathlon Worlds, won the 70-74 gold medal and beat everyone in 65-69 for good measure. USAT's Masters Triathlete of the Year in 1993, Grandmasters Triathlete of the Year in 1998. Assesses greatest strength as "competitive nature", with weakness being "old age". Would love to interview the master builders of the Pyramids: "I'd like to know how they DID that". Will eat just about anything except anchovies.
