Dave Walters (USA)

Born August 11, 1955. Citizen of the U.S.A. Gold medallist, 45-49, 2000 ITU World Duathlon Championship. BS, Aviation, African Studies, University of Illinois. Married to Janet, two sons. Resides in a suburb of Chicago. Boeing 767 Captain, United Air Lines. Illinois State High School champion in cross-country and the two-mile run. NCAA Division I cross-country All-American. PR's include 5k in 14:06, a half-marathon in 1:03, and the full 26.2 in 2:19. Competed in 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials marathon. Took up duathlon after 1993 ankle surgery limited running miles. Won bronze at Du Worlds in 1995 and silver in 1999, before winning it all in 2000. Coached by Al Logsdon for the last 30 years; credits him with developing a program which builds both strength and speed. Assesses strength as the ability to absorb a "significant amount of discomfort without slowing down", but does tend to overtrain. Most embarrassing moment was crashing during the 1998 Dannon Duathlon Championship while trying to clip into his pedals.
