Jan Muhlenberg (AUS)

Born September 8, 1978. Born in Berlin, citizen of Australia. Gold medallist, 20-24, 2000 ITU World Triathlon Championship. BS, Exercise Science and Human Biology, University of Western Australia. Resident of Sunrise Beach in Queensland. Fitness instructor, aspiring paramedic. Single. Sports background in soccer and surf lifesaving; "I did lots of running as a midfielder and defender". While in the ninth grade, a phys ed teacher encouraged him to ride the 10k back and forth to school. That led to a triathlon, in which he finished fourth against much older students while riding a mountain bike. "So I thought I'd stick with it." Kept improving, was Western Australia Sprint Triathlon Champion in 1998-99-00. Lots of trouble with injuries, including stress fractures, sciatica, and IT band syndrome, "but I can usually slug it out" in spite of troubles. Loves custard and chocolate ("it's so hard to decide"), puts lentils and brussel sprouts high on list of things to avoid. Likes Madonna, though "I don't think I should have revealed that". Father is coach with Noosa Rowing Club, while mother comes from gymnastics background. Sister is an ironman finisher.
