Jim Ward. Born August 31, 1917, died September 4, 2000. Citizen of the U.S.A. Gold medallist in 80+ division at 1999 ITU Triathlon Worlds in Montreal. Long and distinguished career in government service. OSS Army captain in World War II, led Allied guerrilla operations in North Burma. Advised Far East Asian countries following war as part of an elite corp that became the famed Green Berets. Director of the pacification program in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War. Discovered age group running at age of 63, triathlon four years later. Set 70-74 age group record at Hawaiian Ironman in 1991, pioneered the 75-79 division the next year and went 18 minutes faster (15:51:46). Multi-world champion at Olympic distance. Bright, educated, outgoing - one of the sport's great ambassadors. Star of a famous Armor All television commercial. Died of a stroke while on a training ride with members of the St. Pete Maddogs - wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Buried with honors in Arlington National Cemetery, just steps from the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
