Downey (NZL)
Born
July 19, 1930. Citizen of New Zealand. Gold medallist,
70-74, 2000 ITU World Duathlon Championship. MS, Sport
Management and Coaching, Massey University. Lecturer
in Sport, Department of Management Systems, Massey University
School of Business. Has been swimming, cycling, and
running for most of his life, but didn't compete in
triathlon or duathlon until 1998. Despite some considerable
abilities, considers himself just "a social athlete".
Did the 2000 World Duathlon Championship only because
he was already planning to be in Europe on business.
"Sports participation adds balance to my life,
but is not high on my list of priorities . . . The most
important parts of my world championship experience
were the social aspects and the contacts I made".
Eats sparingly from all main food groups, avoids alcohol.
Music tastes run the gamut, from classic to contemporary.
