2001 Age-Group Profiles

Ken Nash (USA)

Born February 5, 1928. Citizen of the U.S.A. Gold medallist in 65-69 at 1993 ITU World Triathlon Championship, gold again in 70-74 in 1998, 1999, and 2000. Resident of San Jose, California. Retired electronic engineer and teacher. Married to Barbara for 44 years. Two children, two grandchildren. Swimmer in high school, but found himself overweight and out of shape at the age of 56. Began running, eventually ran 5k in 22:00. Wife suggested he give triathlon a go, then went to local shop where Dave Scott was giving a clinic and bought him a bike for Christmas. Did his first triathlon in 1992, improved rapidly. National champion twice, six medals in seven trips to the ITU World Championship. Proudest moment was his 15:12 in difficult conditions at 2000 Hawaiian Ironman, which knocked 16 minutes off his previous best on the course. Barbara was his rock - "Without her encouragement, I could not have continued to compete at this level" - but she died of cancer at the end of March.
