Tokyo ITU International Triathlon Race Story and Photos

ITU International Event Tokyo Bay

Fine autumn weather in Tokyo as 41 women started the Olympic format triathlon in Tokyo Bay. Susie Gallucci of the USA finished the 1.5km swim section in first, and stayed alone at the front for the entire bike course. The chase pack led by former World Champion, Michellie Jones of Australia caught Gallucci early on the 10km run course. Jones went on to win by a margin of 1minute, 50 seconds, an indication that she is timing her preparation for upcoming Triathlon World Championships in Cancun, Mexico, 9, 10 November. Japanese teammates, Machiko Nakanishi and Kiyomi Niwata were second and third. Melissa Ashton of Australia was 4th, and Susie Gallucci posted her best International finish in 5th.

The men's event was packed full, with 80 athletes on the start line. Japanese teammates Hideo Fukui and Tsukasa Hirano along with Australia's Courtney Atkinson, led through the swim and quickly formed the lead pack and controlled the race throughout the bike. Courtney Atkinson won the race by gaining lead on the run. Brad Kahlfeldt (AUS) chased from the 2nd pack and finished 2nd. Hideo Fukui finished 3rd. Hirokatsu Tayama of Japan was 4th, Brent MacMahon of Canada was 5th, and the current World Champion, Peter Robertson of Australia was 6th.

Tokyo Bay ITU International Triathlon was the final qualifying event for the 2002 ITU World Championships in Cancun, Mexico.
