2003 Bellingham ITU

International Triathlon

Bellingham, WA - June 1, 2003 – 10:45am Start

 

Parking

Due to serious parking limitations in and around Bloedel Donovan Park, parking is at a severe shortage.  We are requesting that all age group competitors park at the Best Western Lakeway Hotel located at 715 Lakeway Drive, just 1.5 miles from the event site.  Shuttle busses will run from 4:30am to 6:30am to move age group participants to the event site. 

If you choose to park your car near the event site on race day, we have two locations that are available near Bloedel Donovan Park. (Note: These locations will require some walking to reach the event site)

1.)               Sliver Beach Elementary School, 4101 Academy Street

2.)               Kulshan Middle School, 1250 Kenoyer Drive

                       

Elite Transition

Elite Transition will be open from 9:00am to 10:00am on Sunday, June 1st for female bike check-in and from 11:30am to 12:30pm for elite male competitors.   Elite transition will be clearly marked for all male and female competitors with strict controls in this area.  Only athletes with race numbers, ITU officials and Race Staff will be allowed into this transition area.   Each bike must have the bike number attached prior to checking it into transition.  When reporting to transition race morning, you must have a hard shell helmet, your bib number and be body marked to gain access to transition.  Bike mechanics will be at transition area both Saturday and Sunday to assist with any bike problems you may encounter.  Please look for the Elite Athletes Tent outside of the Transition area prior to Check-In.   Note: Elite Competitors will receive their ChampionChip on race morning at the elite tent.  

 

Transition Rules

At the Bakers Breakfast Cookie International Triathlon bike racks will be numbered for your convenience and safety.  You must make sure you rack your bike in the proper place provided!  We do not allow family members or guest into the transition area at any time.  This is a secure area and must stay that way!!  We do NOT ALLOW riding at any time in the transition zone!!

All elite athletes must be out of Transition by 15 minutes prior to the starting of your event.  (No Exceptions)

 

Wave Starts

The ITU Bakers Breakfast Cookie International Triathlon from Bellingham, WA will have 2 separate elite wave starts at this event!

Female Competitors                                                               10:45am

Male Competitors                                                               1:00pm

 

1,500 Meter Swim Course – Lake Whatcom

Swimmers will leave the beach front at Bloedel Donovan Park and swim a single rectangle loop 1,500 swim course.  The swim course will be marked with large red buoys and monitored by 12 certified life guards and 12 kayakers.

 

40K Cycling Course 

The 40K cycling course at this years ITU Bakers Breakfast Cookie International Triathlon is one of the toughest 40K bike courses in any triathlon held today.  This course is 6 laps of a 4.1 mile loop that has two climbs, one is about .4 of a mile at an 12% grade and the major climb is .6 of a mile at an 18% grade.  Traffic cones, signage, police and barricades will be used to ensure your safety during this portion of the event. 

Note: Competitors must be alert at all times on the bike course due to rolling hills that will increase your rate of speed as you descend and portions of this event will take you through residential neighborhoods.  The Bakers Breakfast Cookie International Triathlon will have the entire bike course marked with white directional signs and arrows for easy viewing! 10K Run Course

The 10K run of this Olympic distance event will take competitors on a hilly double loop course.  Each 3.1 mile loop will bring competitors near the finish line and transition for great spectator viewing.   The run course will offer bottled water at each mile mark, as well as, on site medical services.  The Bakers Breakfast Cookie International Triathlon will have the entire run course marked with white directional signs and arrows for easy viewing! Awards & Prizes

The ITU Baker’s Breakfast Cookie International Triathlon will offer an elite prize purse of $35,000.00 dollars and valuable ITU Olympic qualifying points.   Note: Please see the attached Elite and Age Group Prize Purse Breakdown.
