Win Vilo Vehlo ITU International Triathlon

18 May 2003: Brazilian women captured the entire podium at the Vilo Vehlo ITU International Triathlon.  The event which took place at Espírito Santo was an Olympic format competition consisting of a 1.5km swim, a 40km bike and a 10km run.  The event also offered valuable world ranking points for qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games Triathlon in Athens. 

Sandra Soldan, a native of Rio de Janeiro won the event in 2:05:02, while São Paulo’s Mariana Ohata was 2nd , 27 seconds behind.  Carla Morena was 3rd a further 30 seconds back. 

In the men’s event, it was a sprint to the finish as less than one second separated Leandro Macedo and his Brazilian teammate Jucaci Moreira who finished in 1:45:28 and 1:45:29 respectively.  Norbert Domnik of Austria was 3rd in 1:46:20. 

After the race, Juraci Moreiro stated, “I gave everything I had today, but it seemed as if Leandro had all the force of the world inside of him, and when he made his move I was not able to overtake him again.”  The 24 year old Moreira was proud of the strong finish and went on to state, “The year is beginning in a good way for me”.
