5th Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe

Coming this weekend, one of the most expected events among the Small States of Europe will be hosted by Cyprus. The Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe open to European countries with a population of less than a million.

This Championship is the first one to be held outside Malta since the last year's decision of the participating countries that a different country each year will host the event in rotating sequence.

Competing athletes will have the opportunity to earn ITU ranking points for the second year in a row. The participating countries in 2004 with their National teams are: Luxemburg, Malta, Monaco and Cyprus. It seems that the other eligible countries: Liechtenstein, San Marino, Andorra and Iceland are once again unable to send their National teams.

Titles for all four previous Championships went to triathletes from Luxemburg.

Intense competition is forecast, since in both women's and men's event, defending champions Jackie Komes and Tom Carier will be present. Monaco with its strong swimmers will probably try to establish a winning lead early in the race, while Malta's National teem, ever improving with high ambitions and athletes able to achieve top positions will be a team to consider.
In the men's event the Cypriot fans will have Soteris Nicolaou to cheer. Soteris is the Cyprus Champion for 2003 and a Bronze medalist in the age group 20-24 in 2003 European Championships.
