Two months to go to the Triathlon Test Event! Twelve months to go to the Athens Olympic Games Triathlon
Gergely Markus (photo left), Athens Olympic Games Triathlon Competition Manager writes: Dear Friends, One year before the 2004 Olympic Triathlon and two months before the Test Event I would like to take the opportunity to give you some more information about the races.

We are progressing well in the ATHENS 2004 Triathlon department. Our main focus is now on the Test Event. The race will be organised on the 25th of October in Vouliagmeni. Information about the race is available on both the ITU and the ATHENS 2004 website. The International Triathlon Union awarded World Cup ranking points to the race and we are working on the prize money which has not been confirmed yet.

The Organising Committee released rooms in two hotels in Vouliagmeni. Please check the Accommodation form on the following address: http://www.triathlon.org/world-cup/wcup2003/athens/event-details/accommodation.PDF and send it back to the e mail or fax number as requested. The original deadline for the booking was 10th of August, now we have extended this deadline until the end of August. If you book the hotel through the Organising Committee we will organise airport transportation of the delegation, otherwise you have to do it individually. Please cooperate with us and book the hotel room as soon as possible! I am looking forward to welcome you in Athens!

The maximum number of athletes in the Test Event will be 75 men and 75 women. The entry requests has to be sent to the ITU Hdq.>

IOC Web Site
The official web site of the International Olympic Committee was successfully launched last year during the XIX Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, with the primary goal of providing a greatly increased level of information on the Olympic Movement.
In this regard, specific pages on the sport of each International Olympic Summer and Winter Sports Federation were developed covering such areas as origins, rules, equipment, identification of information on the respective IF. In a continuing effort to provide accurate and up to date information we have attached print outs of related web site pages and kindly ask you to communicate any necessary changes which could have arisen during this past year. This is a very important project for the continuous efforts of the International Olympic Committee to provide information on the Olympic Movement, in particular on all sports and IFs, and we look forward to your continued support and positive collaboration on this project.

Greek Elections
Olympic Games, Greece: In 2004 there will be a general election in Greece, probably April. Good timing!

In 416 the citizens of Athens were also faced with an election. One of the candidates, Alcibiades reminded the Athenians that he had at his own considerable expense, just entered seven teams in the chariot race at the Olympic Games that year, more than any citizen had ever put forward. He had done so, he said, to demonstrate Athenian power (Thueydides)

Another candidate, Nicias gave a spectacular demonstration of his devotion to the Olympic Games and the Greek gods, with a great display of opulence, precision and drama with a choral procession. At sunrise he led his Athenian followers from the island of Rheneia over a bridge of boats to the temple of Apollo on the island of Delos. The beautifully costumed chorus, singing as it went, seemed to those on Delos to be walking on water into the rising sun (Plutarch). All we ask of Athens 2004 is to complete the road work for the bike course, and find a pontoon for the swim start in time for the test event 25 October, 2003

A programme of the event week's activities will be posted on the ITU website shortly, but a tentative list is:
Thursday: registration
Friday: Registration, Opening ceremony
Saturday: Juniors; Elite

Denmark's Rasmus Henning Finishing the Fredericia (ITU World Championships 2001)

2004 ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championship Bid, Fredericia, Denmark
The Danish Triathlon Union and Fredericia Triathlon Team have bid for the 2004 ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships to the International Triathlon Union (ITU)

The proposed bid is for The World Championship to be held over the long distance (20 km run, 120 km bike and 10 km run), and will take place (if selected) on Sunday, August 1, 2003.

The Fredericia Triathlon Team is very optimistic that ITU will chose Fredericia to host yet another major international event. The 2004 World Championship Duathlon will be the 9th International event to be held in Fredericia over the past 10 years. Previous races have included the World Championship Triathlon in 2001 and 2 European Triathlon Championships, most recently in August this year. Due to the success of these past events, the Danish Triathlon Union and Fredericia Triathlon Team has already been appointed to host the 2005 ITU Long Distance World Championship Triathlon. *

UPDATE FROM THE AFRICAN TRIATHLON UNION
Liesbeth Stoltz, President of the African Triathlon Union writes: The main objective for the African Triathlon Union during the second quarter is a membership drive with special attention to countries bordering the Mediterranean coast. These countries will be invited to affiliate to the ATU in order to get the benefits of an Olympic sport and also to develop the potential of their athletes. Most of the Elite and Under 23 athletes from the southern part of Africa (Namibia, Zimbabwe and the Republic of South Africa) followed the sun and are based with clubs in the Northern Hemisphere where they train and compete in local and ITU events. South African Claude Eksteen is having a successful season in Germany while Rory Mackie from Zimbabwe is competing in ITU points races on the American continent, Megan Hall is racing in Oceania and Charmain Shannon from Namibia is on a scholarship in Winnipeg, Canada where she is receiving specialised Triathlon coaching.Back home, winter has set in and the focus has shifted to Duathlon . Theives Shatter Colombian Athletes Successful Season
Since 1997, Carmenza Morales and Ricardo Cardeno have been the top ranked triathletes in Colombia. They have represented their country in many international events, with excellent results. They recently both won the San Andres Triathlon, which was an ITU Event, adding points to their dream of competing in the next Olympic Games in Athens.

Upon their return from San Andres to their training headquarters in Medellin, they were welcomed in a very unpleasant way, (sometimes typical of their beloved city).

As they were parking at their home, there were robbed at gunpoint by some criminals who stole their car with everything in it. They took everything they had, including everything in their pockets. They lost all their luggage, in which they had all their training and competition equipment. In addition they also lost their identification cards and the money they had won in San Andres. They were left with only the clothes they had on. Carmenza and Ricardo were of course very thankful not to be harmed, with the loss only of material things. They resolved that as soon as they recovered from the shock, which they hope will be soon, they will start normal training again.

Through the years they have acquired an arsenal of the latest sports equipment which these criminals took. It will be very difficult for them to recover this equipment, since they do not have a sponsor who is able to supply it. Everyone can rest assured that they will rise from this situation like the Phoenix and they will continue to work and fight for our sport, the Triathlon, which they love. Carmenza and Ricardo wanted to share this story with you because it is a way for them to comfort themselves and to tell you about the difficult times they are living at this moment. Some difficulties which sometimes are very common to those who live in their cities.

Czech Triathlon Association Elects a New Board
Vaclav Marek, General Secretary of the Czech Triathlon Federation writes: On behalf of the Czech Triathlon Association I would like to inform you that the Extraordinary General Meeting of the Czech Triathlon Association elected a new Executive Board on the 27th of June, 2003. The new President is Mr. Jaromir Horak and the Vice President Mr. Jiri Jelinik. The new Executive Board believes that it will continue on the positive co-operation with ITU and the ETU, started by Mr. Pavel Koran.

News From Leanda Cave (Triathlon World Champion):
Leanda Cave (photo-left) writes: It has been many weeks since I came 2nd to Michelle Dillon in the National Champs here in Britain. It was close between us both, but anyone who knows "Dillo", also knows she can run like the clappers, which is why she won her Bronze medal last year at the World Champs in Cancun. However, since then, life for me as an athlete has had its ups and downs. Since Nationals, I have battled with a hamstring injury. Don't know how, as I hardly have any muscles to get injured! It is still a bit of a mystery as to exactly what it is. However it was a bit of a mistake to race the European Champs on it, as from there it just got worse.
I am not one to take my own advice, which is to anyone who is injured, don't do anything on an injury that makes it worse! And here I am, out of competition now for about 6 weeks and not enjoying it one bit, as I absolutely love to race. But on a brighter note, I have on board a new sponsor......Visa. They have formed Team Visa, where I am part of a group of 5 Olympic hopefuls for next year in Athens. We also have a mentor, who is also one of my sporting icons, Sir Steve Redgrave. For anyone who isn't into British Sporting Legends or rowing, he has been to 5 Olympics as an athlete and won gold at all of them. What an honour to have him as a guide to such an event in which he is not so familiar. Now I just got to get through the selection race for the British Olympic triathlon team which luckly isn't until next year. I suppose things could be worse......and this could be next year, which would mean I am out of contention for the Olympics all together.
Malta Triathlon Association
Emmanuel Azzopardi, President, Malta Triathlon Association and Faabienne Azzopardi, Secretary General, Malta Triathlon Association write: Dear Mr. McDonald, It is our pleasure to present you with a Presentation File of the Triathlon Championships of the Small States of Europe. As you can see, these Championships were a great success and attracted substantial media attention locally. This is good news for us because triathlon, unfornately, is still one of the minor sports in Malta. These Championships also helped to bring together triathlon officials from other countries to our shores and this provided an ideal platform for us to discuss some common problems that we face.
The granting of World Ranking Status to our Race has helped to put these Championships on the world triathlon map as well as provide an excellent opportunity for triathletes from less privileged countries to score points. As you can see from the Race Report, Mr. Bambos Spanoudes, President of the Cyprus Triathlon Federation, proposed that Cyprus be granted the right to organise the next edition of the Championships. Everybody around the table (Monaco, Luxembourg and Malta) agreed and all we have to settle now is the date - probably in April or May. Faabienne and I will, we hope, attend the ITU Congress which is due in September in Nice. We hope to meet each other again there.

Queenstown ITU Triathlon World Championships Update:
Arthur Klap, Event Drector writes: The planning for the SBS ITU Triathlon World Championships 2003 is really picking up as we approach the final months. The entry form is now on the event website, www.triworlds2003.com, and countries are able to enter on line or by fax. The on line registration is a special service that allows countries to continue to update their entries right through to November 7th. Each country has their own password that enables them to have exclusive access to their on line entries. Any country that has not yet received their password should contact Event Director, Arthur Klap, on arthur@triworlds2003.com.

A number of countries have now indicated that they will have large teams in New Zealand. As an example, Great Britain's Jasmine Flatters mentions 'unprecedented interest' and a likely age group team of 275 competitors! This incredible interest has meant that the organisors have had to redo the wave start timings to ensure that the course is not too crowded. The new wave timings can be viewed on the event website. (Photo left: Hamish Carter leads up the big hill in Queenstown)

Also on the website are 3D maps and course profiles of the sprint, the age group and the elite cycle and run courses. These maps are designed to give competitors a better understanding of not only the course but also the terrain surrounding the course. The Queenstown course is a special one that will test age groupers and the elite.

Finally, all countries are encouraged to urgently to book their travel and accommodation as flights and beds are at a premium because of the record numbers entering. To do so contact Paul Tibbutt at Air New Zealand Destinations at paul.tibbutt@airnz.co.nz.

International Coaches Conference
On Wednesday December 3 2003, as part of the lead up to the 2003 SBS World Triathlon Championships, there will be a one day International Coaches Conference held at Rydges Hotel in Queenstown, New Zealand.

The conference is being organised by Triathlon New Zealand's High Performance Programme in association with the New Zealand Olympic Committe and the New Zealand Academy of Sport.

It will feature a range of international presenters and cover current issues in the coaching of elite triathlon. More information including programme, presenters, cost etc, will be available in mid August.

Conference contact: Richard Lindroos, Chairman, Tri NZ High Performance Commission, rlindroos@clear.net.nz or on 021 56 54 56 (mobile)

The amazing coastline near Geelong

Geelong ITU World Cup: Davie Hansen, Event Manager writes: This year's ITU Triathlon World Cup - Geelong on Sunday 23rd November promises to be one of the most exciting events of the ITU World Cup Series. Many international teams will be racing in Geelong and then travelling on to Queenstown for the World Championships 2 weeks later

In 2002 the inaugural Geelong event saw the familiar Olympic triathlon equipment used for the first time since the successful Olympic events. It also saw David Hansen (Olympic Organiser) and his team at Super Sprint introduce several new innovations to the sport, pursuing their goal to take the organisation of triathlons to a higher level after Sydney. The most significant innovation was to locate the transition in the centre of the bike and run course and ride and run through the transition including the finish arch each lap. The Olympic bike racks and finish arch along with the familiar blue carpet were integral to the set up and combined with grandstands and big screen television made an extremely exciting event for competitors, spectators and the media.

The event is located in Geelong, which is 70km south of Melbourne, only 1 hour from the Melbourne airport (Tullamarine.) It is staged on the spectacular Geelong Waterfront, which has one of the best swim start and swim finish areas in the world. The area has restaurants, a major pier, marina and recently won an international award for it's stunning landscape architecture. The event hotel is located opposite the finish line overlooking the venue. In 2002 one of the best ITU fields was assembled for the inaugural event and feedback from athletes was excellent.

One of the key attractions for national teams is that Geelong offers teams a great training base for 2 weeks prior to the World Championships. The city of 180,000 people has a multitude of swimming pools, quiet roads, excellent accommodation at low prices and a similar climate to Queenstown. A number of athletes in 2002 including Carol Montgomery stayed in Geelong for 2 weeks and found the training facilities, tourist activities and hospitality excellent.

The 2003 ITU Triathlon World Cup - Geelong plans to be an exciting event and the local organising committee welcomes all national teams to the event with great training and accommodation for National Teams travelling on to the World Championships.

Geelong offers National teams a prefect training base for their final preparation to the World Championships in Queenstown. There is a multitude of training facilities and a range of accommodation at low prices

Training Facilities
Swimming - Geelong has one 50m indoor pool, two 25m indoor pools, one outdoor 50m pool and a number of pools in the region. Corio Bay where the World Cup is located offers good open water training in water approximately 16 degrees Celsius.

Cycling: Geelong has a great deal of quiet and safe roads for training. A popular long ride is along the Great Ocean Road, which was last year voted internationally the most spectacular road in the world.

Running: Geelong has running paths around Corio Bay, the Barwon River and also a number of athletic tracks.

Accommodations: The local Organising Committee has already booked the Geelong Conference Centre, which is located in the heart of Geelong. It has twin share rooms and suites with packages including breakfast and evening meals from approximately $50 AUD ($32 US) a person per day. For enquiries regarding all accommodation options, and bookings please email details to nicole.doffay@supersprint.com.au

Email: andrew@landlink.com.au
Accommodation: 1 or 2 week accommodation special

Event Plans
The goal of the LOC is to continue to set new and innovative staging ideas to raise the benchmark in event organisation in the sport of triathlons.

This year we are extending the finish line across the entire roadway to ensure greater safety and will place a drop down section in the middle of the arch for the run leg.Swim Leg - 1500m - 1 Lap
Using Olympic Swim buoys with 100m distance markers and the long turn buoy that has now been adopted by other events around the world such as the Commonwealth Games and Edmonton.

The Swim start and finish area is one of the best in the world. It is located at Steam Pack Quay, which allows spectators and media to surround the whole area making it a great spectacle

Cycle - 40km - 8 Laps - Transition: The transition is located in the middle of the cycle course so competitors pass the transition 16 times making it exciting for competitors, media and spectators.

The bike course is undulating, located on the roadway so competitors ride, run and finish through the transition, grandstands, stage, a big screen line and crowds line the course - the action passes the transition 8 times.

Run- 10km - 4 Laps:The run course is mainly flat with two hills and will pass the transition area 8 times in front of a large spectator crowd.

Transition: The transition is carpeted in the blue Olympic carpet and has the Olympic bike racks and transition system. The transition is with technical components and won excellent feedback from competitors.Cycle Course: Super Sprint who also stages the UCI Women's Road Cycling World Cup in Geelong is going to introduce distance markers to go for the cycle and run leg to allow athletes to accurately plan their strategies in finishing the cycle and run course.

SINGAPORE NATIONAL DAY AWARDS 2003:
Nghee Huat, Executive Board member Asian Triathlon Confederation writes: I would like to share with you the honour and joy that I have for being awarded the Public Service Medal (PSM) in the National Day Awards 2003. Singapore National Day Awards are a means of recognising various forms of merit and service to the nation. The Award I received from our President at the Istana later, in short PSM is equal to "Datuk" in Malaysia.

The Singapore Sports Council has been nominating me almost every year for this Award since 1999 and the government put me on the list this year for this honour.

There are 173 people receiving PSM Awards 2003, Singapore Sports Council's Chairman Alex Chan, Table Tennis Association's Vice President and Asian Games Bowling Champion, the only three from sports organisations are amongst the recipients.

This Award is the highest award I will receive in my life after so many years of service for the nation, perhaps it is about time for me to relax and to enjoy more fellowship with nice people like all of you in the ITU family. Thank you once again my dear brothers and sisters for your kind friendship.

WADA WELCOMES ADOPTION OF THE WORLD ANTI-DOPING CODE BY IOC: Montreal, July 4, 2003 - The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) welcomed with great satisfaction the formal adoption of the World Anti-Doping Code by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) today during its session in Prague (Czech Republic).

"The adoption of the Code by acclamation by the IOC is a strong signal for the entire sports movement", said Richard W. Pound, WADA's president. "This decision will encourage sports organizations that have not formally adopted the Code yet to do so at their congresses planned during the year, so that the Code can be implemented prior to the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. It shows also once again the commitment to the fight against doping in sport of the IOC and of its President, Jacques Rogge, who has committed to leaving no place in the Olympic Games for International Sports Federations and National Olympic Committees that don't adopt the Code."

The World Anti-Doping Code is the first document to harmonize the rules and regulations concerning anti-doping across all countries and all sports. The document was approved by delegates at the World Conference on Doping in Sport, which brought together 1,200 participants in Copenhagen (Denmark) from March 3 to 5, 2003.

The list of sports organizations who have formally adopted the Code, as well as governments who have signed the Copenhagen Declaration Against Doping in Sport, affirming their intention to adopt and implement the Code, can be found on WADA's website (www.wada-ama.org).
