Conrad Stoltz Takes ITU African Regional Title

24/03/2001:

DOMINIQUE DONNER AND CONRAD STOLTZ TAKE AFRICAN CROWN

Dominique Donner and Conrad Stoltz, both of South Africa, captured the title "African Champs" in what was the most successful ITU African Championships to date - a testament to the growth of the sport on the Dark Continent.

In the elite women's competition Dominique Donner and up and coming junior Anelle Rabie exited the water in first place in a time of 19:52. Megan Hall of New Zealand was in third place, with Trudi Saunders, winner of the recent Club Mykonos International Triathlon in fourth.

Donner took charge on the bike, putting almost two minutes on her challengers, which was enough of a lead for her to cruise to the finish. A strong run from Megan Hall (41:30) moved her into second. Saunders was third.

The men's event had Conrad Stoltz's name all over it. A group including Stoltz, and South African teammates and brothers Brad and Carl Strom exited the water first and stayed together on the bike. On the run, Stoltz took control to post a 35:28 split - the second fastest of the day. Brad Storm took advantage of the lead on the bike and hung on for second, while South African Raynard Tissink posted the fastest run of the day to take the last step on the podium.

The competition consisted of a 1.5km swim in 19oC water, a 3-lap 40km bike and a 4 lap, 10km run. Air temperature during the bike and run was 27.4oC.
