2001 ITU-IOC Solidarity Camp

Team Africa at the Solidarity Camp

2001 ITU-IOC Solidarity Camp Report

By: Leslie Beckerman (Camp Manager)

The seventh annual IOC-ITU Solidarity Training Camp took place from July 6th-15th at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada. 23 countries were represented with 36 male and 17 female triathletes in attendance, ranging in age from 14 to 25.

Head Camp coaches Floyd Campbell (CAN), Claude Meyer (FRA) and Ricardo Gonzalez (MEX) were joined by regional coaches Dezroy Poole (RSA) and Graham Park (NZL) along with visiting coaches Oswaldo Santos (COL), Sergio Santos (POR), Roberto Solano (CRC) and Enrique Bollano (ARG).

In addition to training hard every day the triathletes were also presented lectures on swim biomechanics, injury prevention, massage therapy, training planning and race strategy.

During the camp, the athletes had an opportunity to participate in a sprint triathlon in St. Albert and were also able to test their open water swimming technique at Hubble Lake. As well, they visited the World's largest shopping mall, the West Edmonton Wall.

The campers received quite a bit of media coverage during the camp, including stories in the Edmonton Journal and Edmonton Sun, CBC television (French) and a number of radio shows.

The camp was very successful for a number of reasons; we had wonderful coaches a terrific location with close proximity to the World Championships racecourse and incredible support from Shela O'Kelly and the LOC.

The athletes in attendance were of very high caliber and all have great potential. They were some of the best that have ever attended the annual ITU-IOC Solidarity Camp.
