Ki, Woo Kyong, Korea Triathlon Federation writes:
Conditions were perfect for the ITU Seorak Asian Cup Triathlon with water temperature at 19oC and air temperature at 30oC.
The event was the first friendly competition between Korea and Japan. 14 Japanese athletes, including 6 elite men, 5 elite women, and 3 age groupers raced together with 568 Korean athletes. Kazakhstan triathletes dominated both elite men's and women's competition with Dimitri Gaag and Danill Sapunov sprinting for the win, while Ekaterina Shatnaya took the win in the women's event by over 2 minutes. All three athletes from Kazakhstan are heading for the Athens Olympic Games in August. Si Eun Moon from Korea continues to prove that he is ready to break into the international circuit. He finished 6th with a solid performance following his top 20 placing at the recent Tongyeong ITU World Cup.

ITU - ETU LAUNCH KID'S TRIATHLON VIDEO AT AGORA
Ed Rice, Head of ITU Media launched the "TriYoung" video on behalf of ITU and ETU at Agora 2004 in Athens recently. The annual Mediterranean summit has a focus on media for children, but this year picked up on the European Union's "European Year of Education Through Sport (EYES).

The "TriYoung" video was originally produced through a joint venture with Triathlon Canada as a means of promoting their national Kids of Steel programme. The show was produced by TVNW, ITU's television production partner with Martin Perry as Executive Producer, Christine Brown as producer and host, and Kristine Chambers providing the coaching background.

"TriYoung", which has been re-edited and given an international look, was an astounding hit at AGORA. As a result, Ed has initiated discussions with Faith Isiakpere and Firdoze Bulbulia of the Children and Broadcast Foundation for Africa. The foundation is hosting the 2007 World Summit for Children and Media and triathlon and our programmes for youth will be front and centre of the Summit.

Ed is also in discussion with UNICEF, the United Nations' Children's organization to explore ways of using our triathlon resources to introduce triathlon to children who are less advantaged. UNICEF statistics on the success rate of children who are involved with sport compared to those who are not is staggering. Teenage pregnancy was one such surprising statistic where the rate was significantly less for girls engaged in sport.

ITU will be exploring ways to produce "TriTeens", a motivational video for slightly older youth. Stay tuned for more news from Ed on this exciting project, and visit the ITU Media section of www.triathlon.org for more information about ITU video resources.

ATHLETES PROFILES:
Brian Mahoney, ITU Media Web Producer has been polishing up the athlete profiles as part of the work to produce the Media Guide for the Athens Olympic Games. Please check them out by going to the PROFILE section of www.triathlon.org. Country flags have been added, and if athletes have been named by their National Olympic Committee to the Athens Olympic Games Triathlon start list, then the Olympic rings have been added to their name. Thanks Brian - looks great, and thanks to Leslie Buchanan, ITU Technical Director who updates the profiles after each ITU event. Photo rights - World Ranked #1 Maxine Seear of Australia.

LISA OGILVIE MOVES OVER TO TELEVISION

ITU Headquarters bid a fond adieu to ITU Media Manager Lisa Ogilvie this week. Lisa has taken a full time position with TVNW (ITU's television production partner) as an associate producer. At TVNW Lisa will be able to take full advantage of her background in marketing, as well as her knowledge of the Triathlon and other sports.
While at ITU Headquarters, Lisa has done a wonderful job of implementing the ITU News Update under the new format, as well as managing all matters related to media requests. Although she will not be far away, and our paths will cross often with television business, we will not see her as often as we have in the past which makes us sad. Still it is a good career move for Lisa and we all wish her the very best.

ITUTV PREPARES OFFICIAL LAUNCH IN TIME FOR EDMONTON ITU WORLD CUP
Ed Rice, Head of ITU Media writes: If you tuned into the live coverage of the Tongyeong ITU World Cup you were undoubtedly quite impressed by the live coverage which included insightful audio commentary by Barrie Shepley (on site), technical support from Imagination Interaction (Scott Koons and Nathan Schipper) in Atlanta, picture updates by Brian Mahony, live results by Gerardo Tasistro, text updates by Loreen Barnett (all on site), and background fiddling by Ed Rice in Ireland.

ITUtv used the Madeira ITU World Championships, the Geel ITU Duathlon World Championships and the Tongyeong ITU World Cup as dress rehearsals for the official launch of ITUtv.

With all systems "A-GO", the official launch of ITUtv will be on Sunday, June 11th at the Edmonton ITU World Cup. Live commentary will feature Jackie Fairweather (nee Gallagher), who impressed everyone at the Madeira World Championships with her colourful coverage and knowledgeble reportage, and ITU's official television colour commentator, Barrie Shepley.

Along with the live coverage of the World Cup event, the entire 2003 ITU World Cup television shows will also be available on demand.

We owe a hearty thanks to our live webcast partners Imagination Interactive, and the Koons family for doing such a superb job at their end.Be sure to tune into www.triathlon.org regularly for more information about ITUtv.

PAN-AMERICAN CUP SERIES HITS THE BIG APPLE

BJ Hoeptner, USAT Media Director writes: The PanAmerican Cup Series makes a stop in New York on Sunday. The race is one of five Cup races scheduled to be held in the United States this year. Among those elite triathletes scheduled to compete are U.S. Olympic nominee Victor Plata (pending U.S. Olympic Committee final approval) from San Luis Obispo, Calif., top U.S. triathlete Doug Friman and Australian Olympic team member and 2000 Olympian Loretta Harrop. U.S. Olympian Sheila Taormina (Livonia, Mich.) is also in town, but, due to injury, will compete as part of a charity relay team rather than doing the full elite race.

The elite race will see the athletes swim the Hudson River from 101st Street to 81st Street. They will transition and ride one lap on the Henry Hudson Parkway before the second transition in Central Park. The run will be three laps through the park before finishing between Tavern on the Green and the Central Park band shell. Athletes will be competing for a $30,000 prize purse and ITU PanAmericanl Cup ranking points. Athletes must be ranked in the ITU top 125 to qualify for the Olympic Games. Qualifying for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens is over, so points gathered now will go toward a future ranking for the 2008 Games in Beijing.

The elite race will be preceded by the Ford New York City Triathlon for age group triathletes. That race will start at 6 a.m. The elite women are scheduled to start at 8 a.m., followed by the men at 9 a.m.
