Victoria ITU International Triathlon Takes a Hiatus in 2004

The 2004 Victoria International Triathlon is taking a hiatus in 2004 as the PacificSport National Triathlon Centre focuses its attention on the Olympic Games in Athens this August.

The fourth annual event was tentatively scheduled for May 30th, and the organizing committee anticipates holding the popular Olympic distance event in 2005.

"The PacificSport National Triathlon Centre is focusing on preparing its athletes and coaches for the Olympic Games," said Paul Regensburg, Director for the PacificSport National Triathlon Centre. "While the Victoria International Triathlon has been aptly handled by an excellent volunteer organizing committee, an international event of this magnitude puts extra demands on athletes, coaches and staff and it is the Centre's decision to focus on one major event this year and for 2004 that event is in Athens."

The event, a partnership with the PacificSport National Triathlon Centre, PacificSport Victoria and Triathlon Canada, has attracted many international triathletes seeking precious International Triathlon Union (ITU) points over the past three years.

It has also attracted hundreds of age-group athletes and has garnered respect for its organization and compliments for its location, namely Thetis Lake Regional Park and the roads of Greater Victoria's Western Communities.

Regensburg and Lance Watson, Head Coach for the PacificSport National Triathlon Centre, are key support staff to Canada's triathletes competing in Athens. They will oversee the Canadian triathlon team comprised of three women and two men.

"We'd like to thank all those athletes, coaches, sponsors, fans and volunteers who have supported us over the past few years," added Regensburg. "We can not hold an event like this without them and ask them to watch us in Athens this August and watch for the Victoria International Triathlon returning in 2005."
