Announcement from the ETU Treasurer, Graeme Kempson - All Athlete Prize Money has now been Settled (Information Courtesy ETU)

In early 2002 a new ETU Executive Board was elected at an Extraordinary Congress in Paris. They inherited many problems, including financial ones that they were determined to resolve.

The first imperative was to ensure the settlement of all prize monies for which the ETU was directly responsible, owing to athletes from the old administration as quickly as was possible. Other necessities for running ETU that required cash were deferred where possible, with one exception - the unexpected support for the 2003 Triathlon Championships.

In this 2 year period ETU have now managed to settle all these old debts created by the previous management of ETU, to athletes which amounted to some €120,000, and have still managed a viable and successful organisation in the interim. This has been achieved because of the excellent cooperation with the International Triathlon Union lead by President Les McDonald and the volunteer based work within the Executive Board have partly financed the running of the ETU both personally, and with the support of their National Federation and/or Government.

The ETU regret that athletes have had to wait such a long time for their prize money, but it is with satisfaction that ETU can state they have now met their obligations to the most important asset of Triathlon – the athletes!

This is a significant but small step by ETU. Work goes on. There is still much to do...
