Riva and Marianne Vlasveld Elected to ITU Winter Triathlon
Commission
Brusson,
Italy, 22 February 2002: Athletes assembled for
the 2002 ITU Brusson Winter Triathlon World Championships
voted to elect two athletes to the ITU Winter Triathlon
Commission. In the elections that followed, veteran
Winter Triathlete and Olympian in Cross Country Skiing,
Paolo Riva of Italy and the current leader of the
2002 World Winter Triathlon Ranking, Marianne Vlasveld
were elected.
Following
a lengthy discussion about future development of the
sport, the athletes unanimously passed the following
motion: That the athletes gathered for the 2002
ITU Winter Triathlon respectfully request of the International
Olympic Committee that Winter Triathlon be included
on the programme of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games
in Turin, Italy."
Michel
Gignoux (FRA) who chairs the ITU Winter Triathlon
Commission said after the meeting, "The Winter
Triathletes are very committed to their sport and
are very keen to play a role in developing the sport
worldwide. Under the leadership of Paolo and Marianne,
this sport is going to go places."
The
2002 ITU Brusson Winter Triathlon Championships gets
underway at 10:00 a.m. local time on Saturday 23 February,
while the 2002 ITU Brusson Winter Triathlon Team Championships
are scheduled for Sunday 24 February.
