America's 1st ITU Winter Tri

Canmore to host North America's First Ever ITU Winter Triathlon

A new challenge awaits North Americans…. Winter Triathlon!
The sport that is already snowballing in popularity in Europe is coming to Canmore, Alberta. Canmore is the final stop on the season's International Triathlon Union (ITU) Winter Triathlon circuit. The event is a combined International Points Race and the Canadian Winter Triathlon National Championship.

The Venue: The world-class Nordic Centre in Canmore, Alberta.
Event Date: March 16, 2002
The Event: Run - 8.5 km Mountain Bike - 12.5 km Cross Country Ski - 10 km
The course is on spectator friendly, looped, groomed, snow - covered trails. Athletes complete the three disciplines in rapid succession.

Media Opportunity: Calgary Airport - Thursday, March 14, 5: 30 pm

  • Meet the current ITU Winter Triathlon World Champions prior to their final race of the season.
  • Marianne Vlasveld of the Netherlands and Mark Rhue of Liechtenstein arrive on AC flight 851 from London at 1720.
  • They will be available at the kiosk on the International Arrivals level (concourse B/C - next to Second Cup) to speak to media.
  • ITU Winter Triathlon Technical Director, Michel Gignoux of France and Canmore Race Director Bill Murray will also be available to answer media inquiries.
  • Local Canadian athletes will "tri" this new sport on the canmore course prior to the elite race in the age category event.
