Canmore Winter Triathlon

Europeans Ready to Take Canmore by Storm

Europeans have already embraced the latest multisport event to be included under the umbrella (or snow shelter as the case may be) of the International Triathlon Union (ITU) - Winter Triathlon.

For the first time, North Americans can 'tri' this event so well suited to Canada's climate. Canmore, Alberta will play host to the Canadian Winter Triathlon Championship and ITU Points Race on March 16, 2002.

A large group of athletes from Europe are planning to compete in this finale to the ITU Winter Triathlon World Cup Series. Canmore Organizing Committee Chair, Bill Murray, promises that this first-ever North American stop on the Winter Series will be a superb end to a great season.

Athletes will be arriving from Switzerland, Spain, France and Germany and among them are the current men's and women's World Champions and World Cup points leaders.

The three disciplines involved are Run, Mountain Bike and Cross Country Ski, completed in rapid succession and all on snow covered trails at the spectacular Canmore Nordic Centre.

The event in Canmore will have a stellar elite wave and will also feature, in the manner of summer triathlon, an age category event. A junior sprint category is also available.

"Alberta has so many athletes who run, bike and ski, we are sure many will be anxious to 'tri' this new combined challenge," said Murray.
