ITU Season Finale Hits the Beach in Cancun

Cancun, Mexico: After seven long months the ITU World Cup series is in the home stretch and Cancun, Mexico is the last stop on the road to the IOC President's Cup trophy and year-end series honours. Some of the world's top athletes are making the trip to the Yucatan peninsula in a race for the last few world cup points of the season.

On the women's side, Lausanne World Cup winner, Siri Lindley from the USA, will be on the line along with newly crowned Aquathlon champion, Pilar Hidalgo from Spain. Japanese Olympian, Haruna Hosoya will also contest this weekend's race along with Brazilian Olympic team member, Sandra Soldan.

A competitive men's field is also lined up in an attempt to wrestle the season's top honours away from frontrunner, Dimitry Gaag from Kazakhstan, who will be pushing hard to maintain his grasp on the cup. Challenges to Gaag will come from Pan American Games gold medallist, Gilberto Gonzalez from Venezuela who has won on this course before and is known for his ability to run in the heat.

Also on the line will be newly crowned Aquathlon champion, Matt Reed from New Zealand and Hungary World Cup winner, Martin Krnavek from the Czech Republic. Meanwhile, Mexico's hopes will focus on up and comer, Uzziel Valderrabano.

The course for this weekend's race takes competitors over a 2 lap 1500metre swim in the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean ocean, then over a fast but technical 6 lap 40km bike course before completing their race with a flat fast 4 lap 10km run. Heat will be a major factor on Sunday as temperatures are expected to soar into the thirties.

The day before the ITU World Cup finale, hundreds of competitors from the Pan American region will also hit the road in Cancun for the 2000 ITU Pan American Triathlon Championships. Competitors in attendance will compete over the same distances as the elite World Cup competitors but over a slightly different course to accommodate the larger number of participants.
