Olympic Champion Brigette McMahon

21 August 2001

World Champion Lindley will meet Olympic Champion McMahon

All eyes will be focussed upon the competition between World Champion Siri Lindley and Olympic Champion Brigitte McMahon in Lausanne, this weekend, as the pair meet for the first time this season.

Olympic Champion McMahon (SUI) discovered soon after she clinched gold in Sydney 2000 that she was expecting her second child. Almost a year later, and following the happy addition to her family, McMahon will return to ITU World Cup racing and will meet the dominant athlete of the season, Siri Lindley (USA).

Lindley has won every race she has entered since the beginning of June, including ITU World Cups in Toronto, Corner Brook and Tiszaujvaros and the World Championships. The schedule has been tough for Lindley and it will be tough for the 32 year old to retain this level.

While the match up will be enthralling, other form athletes will race for premium ITU World Ranking and Olympic qualifying points.

Last weekend's runners up to Lindley in Tiszaujvaros, Wieke Hoogzaad (NED) and Anje Dittmer (GER) will be certain to figure in the race to the podium. Hoogzaad is approaching the best form of her career, while Dittmer has missed the entire ITU season to date, recovering from a foot injury.

Top ten finishers from the World Championships Kathleen Smet (BEL) and Silvia Gemignani (ITA) are fresh and rested since the 22 July event in Edmonton, Canada, in contrast to the hectic racing schedule of Hoogzaad and Lindley.

ITU World Ranking and Olympic qualification points are at a premium, as positions are swapped and jostled with three World Cup races remaining on the calendar.

And one of the captivating rivalries is unfolding between World Number One, Chris Hill (AUS) and World Number Three, Craig Watson (NZL). While Hill has chosen not to race in Lausanne, Watson has the opportunity to steal the rankings lead if he can win this weekend.

However Martin Krnavek (CZE), winner of the Corner Brook and Tiszaujvaros ITU World Cup races will be difficult to beat. He is riding high on the adrenaline of success and motivated by a disappointing flu virus in Edmonton, ending his chances of World Championship success.
Former World Champion Chris McCormack (AUS) shares that disappointment with Krnavek. Arguably the strongest cyclist on the ITU circuit, McCormack crashed out of the Edmonton race and will look for retribution in Lausanne.

Both the women's and men's races are heavy with European entries, some in preparation for the Goodwill Games, to be held in Brisbane, Australia on 2 September.

The next event on the calendar is the ITU World Long Distance Duathlon Championships in Venray, Holland on 9 September.
