Round three of ITU World Cup Series heads for the Sunshine State

This weekend many of the world's top athletes will make their way to St. Petersburg, Florida for the only US based ITU World Cup of 2001.

Among those ready to battle it out for a podium position in the heat of the Florida sun is men's Olympic champion, Simon Whitfield (CAN) in his first World Cup event of 2001.

The Canadian is up against some tough competition including British legend Simon Lessing - Lessing may have finished out of the medals at the Olympics but is always a consistent competitor at ITU World Cup events and one to watch for. He has been World Champion four times since 1990 and has won four ITU World Cups since 1998.

Top US triathlete Hunter Kemper will also make his series debut in Florida along with Gamagori World Cup silver medalist, Matt Reed from New Zealand fresh off of two strong races in Japan.

In the women's event, Australian Michellie Jones, silver medallist at the Sydney Olympics will be competing in her first World Cup of the season. She is racing against a fearsome field including American teammates Barbara Lindquist and Laura Reback and Canadians Carol Montgomery and Sharon Donnelly.

Lindquist came second at the Ishigaki World Cup last week while Reback proved she is one to watch for in 2001 - after months of training with Olympic Champion Simon Whitfield, she won her first ITU World Cup in Gamagori and came fourth in Ishigaki after a grueling race.

Carol Montgomery is undoubtedly the strongest runner on the women's circuit and will be looking for a good start to her World Cup season. Montgomery has already proven her prowess at racing in the Florida heat with a first place finish at the recent Pan American Triathlon Championships in Cleremont, Florida.

The St. Petersburg course consists of a 1500m two-lap saltwater swim in Tampa Bay with expected water temperatures of 75-80 degrees F so no wetsuits will be allowed. The 40Km bike ride is eight laps of a flat, fairly technical route along the downtown waterfront and the 10k run is four laps also on the flat.

Stay tuned to this web-site for all the latest up to date race information . . .
