Corner Brook, Newfoundland– Stage #5 on 2004 World Cup

 

Corner Brook, Newfoundland: For immediate release: A perennial favourite on the Triathlon World Cup tour, the Corner Brook event is known worldwide for its hospitality, flawless organization, spectacular and challenging course, and one of the most spectator-friendly events in the world.

In the women’s event Jill Savege of Canada is returning to defend the title she won in 2003.  Savege will be using the challenging hills of Corner Brook to continue her preparation for the Athens Olympic Games Triathlon.  She will be challenged by Kathleen Smet, a consistent competitor on the Corner Brook course, and also on her way to Athens.  Pip Taylor of Australia who was 2nd at the Tongyeong World Cup earlier this year is also expected to challenge Savege as well as Carol Montgomery of Canada and British team-mates Andrea Whitcombe and Jessica Harrison.

Marc Jenkins of Great Britain highlights the men’s field and has been a top finisher on Corner Brook many times.  He will be challenged by several men who are headed to the Athens Olympic Games including Gilberto Gonzalez of Venezuela, Victor Plata of the USA, Brent McMahon of Canada, Nathan Richmond of New Zealand and Marko Albert of Estonia.

Athletes will be competing for $75,000us prize money and the coveted World Cup Ranking points.

The ITU Media team will be in Corner Brook to provide live coverage of the event on ITUtv.com.  It will include live audio, photos, live results, and text update.  A 52 minute television show produced by TVNW, ITU’s in-house television production company, will be distributed within 10 days of the event to a potential 1 billion households worldwide.
